Tribeca Festival Reveals The Essence of Everyday Life

Tribeca Festival Reveals The Essence of Everyday Life

Artists, writers, directors and enthusiasts filled the 4,000 feet between Union Square Park and Tompkins Square Park late into the evening.

Interdependent mingling is happening every day in New York City, and an influx of people spilled into the scene from June 5-16 for the 2024 Tribeca Festival.

These 11 days are a huge attraction: panels, music, immersive experiences, a 3-day festival dedicated to its founder Robert De Niro, and the highly anticipated premieres of feature and short films from the US and around the world.

Co-Founder Jan Rosenthal believes the 215 filmmakers featured this year capture, “the essence of the present moment” and it was on the sidewalks, away from ticket lines, across plazas, and in the streets between Bowery hotels and Tribeca bars where I felt this sentiment ring true.

Imagine strolling through lower Manhattan, dreaming up ideas, and being in the company of spirited creatives – this week was a holistic gathering of artists enjoying the company of our contemporaries, and it revealed the camaraderie available to us in everyday moments.

I’ve played the role of guest, press and publicist in these types of settings, and the most invaluable part of Tribeca 2024 is the emerging filmmakers in attendance – and not just the ones having their world premieres.

Throughout the week, we were discussing projects in post-production, perfecting color and sound, financing a new vision, and distributing films from recent screenings.

It was a vibrant scene of storytellers propelling us into community with each other, and we celebrated their art and commitment to creativity. As these films now take their natural course, I’m pleased to share some favorites and who I’m watching ascend throughout this year and beyond.

These eight selections are about progressing towards your vision, caring deeply about a story, and moving forward one step at a time:

1) THE SHALLOW TALE OF A WRITER WHO DECIDED
TO WRITE ABOUT A SERIAL KILLER

Written and Directed by Tolga Karacelik, this film is a compelling story about the unconventional and unusually-relatable elements of being an artist. The evolution of Britt Lower‘s character is thrilling to watch and I look forward to seeing this film reach more audiences. See Tribeca for more.

2) I WANT TO VIOLENTLY CRASH INTO THE WINDSHIELD OF LOVE

Written and Directed by Fernanda Tovar, this film embodies stillness, presence, and mindfulness – depicting a snapshot of Güera‘s life between healing and rediscovering her own artistic voice. See Tribeca for more.

3) A ROSE FOR KATRINA

Written and Directed by Harry Quinlan, I was immediately drawn in by David McKinnar‘s cinematography – a series of prolonged shots from one perspective – and a piercing performance by Megan Smart. See Tribeca for more.

4) GRIFFIN IN SUMMER

Written and Directed by Nicholas Colia, the theater was bursting with laughter from the opening scene throughout the whole film. A joy to watchEverett Blunck plays a fourteen-year-old playwright named Griffin who’s adamant about directing an original, divorce-drama play this summer. Along the way, he meets Brad (played by Owen Teague), a twenty-five-year-old performance artist home for the summer from New York City. See Tribeca for more.

5) EBB & FLOW

Written and Directed by Nay Tabbara, this is a beautiful film about childhood naivete being a metaphorical shield from uncontrollable atrocities. A great performance by Dona Atallah. See Tribeca for more.

6) SATISFIED

Original footage from Renée Elise Goldsberry and directed and produced by Chris Bolan and Melissa Haizlip, this documentary explores Renée’s pursuit of motherhood alongside the co-creation of her role as Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton.

After seeing Renée in a recent roundtable discussion and learning about her Pittsburgh roots, I feel aligned with her perspective as an artist and I’m so excited to watch her continue to rise. See Tribeca for more about this film.

7) ¡SALSA!

Written and Directed by Antonina Kerguelen Roman and completed over the course of seven years, this is a beautiful story about Margarita (played by Saray Nohemi), a small-town local who crosses paths with Liana (played by Isabelle Troup), a deaf tourist, and the intimacy available to them through music. See Tribeca for more.

8) I NEED YOUR LOVE

Written and Directed by Walker Kalan, this indie episodic series portrays the levity (and competitive nature) between rising stars in New York City, and the dynamics played out between Ines Nassara and co-creator Camille Trust capture this feeling perfectly! See Tribeca for more.

I attended the 2024 Tribeca Festival to witness the outcomes of these filmmaker’s time and attention, and I felt fully immersed in their portrayals of our shared humanity + what it means to feel free. I believe in their characters, I believe in their stories, and I believe in our responsibility as artists to continue reflecting the world.
